How to Make a CV Online: A Practical Step-by-Step Guide

Learn what to include in a CV, how to turn experience into clear evidence, and how to check the PDF before applying.

Start with the role, not the template

Before choosing a design, read the job description and note the work the employer needs done. Your CV should make relevant experience easy to find. Keep a full record of your career separately, then select the parts that support this application.

If you have an older CV, use it as source material. If you are starting fresh, write down roles, dates, projects, education, and skills in a quick form. Do not add outcomes you cannot explain.

Choose a useful section order

For most experienced applicants, use contact details, a short profile, work experience, relevant skills, education, and selected projects or certifications. For a student or fresher, education and projects may deserve more space near the top.

Use a phone number and email address you check. Add a LinkedIn, portfolio, or GitHub link only when it helps the application. Avoid personal details the employer did not request.

Write evidence-based bullets

A useful bullet says what you did and gives enough context to judge it. Compare these illustrative examples:

  • Vague: "Responsible for onboarding reports."
  • Clearer: "Prepared weekly onboarding reports and flagged incomplete records for the operations team."

The second version describes actual work without inventing a percentage. Add a metric only if you can verify it. For a project, describe the problem, your contribution, tools used, and result.

Pick a format that fits the application

Use readable headings, ordinary text, and a consistent date style. Preview the finished document at its intended paper size. Carve offers nine CV layouts, including education-first and experience-first choices. You can make a CV with the free online CV builder or use the quick form without AI extraction.

In India, A4 is common; for some international applications, US Letter may be requested. Follow the employer's instructions when they specify a file type or format.

Check the file before sending it

Read the PDF outside the editor. Check names, dates, page breaks, links, spelling, and whether all text remains selectable. Give the file a clear name and keep a copy of the version sent for each role.

Carve's core builder lets you review, edit, and download a PDF without creating an account. Sign in only if you want saved versions or Pro features. For India-specific education and fresher guidance, see the India CV maker.
