Resume vs CV: What Indian Recruiters Actually Want
In India, "resume" and "CV" are used interchangeably. But there are real differences. Here is what recruiters expect based on the role and industry.
The confusion
In India, most people use "resume" and "CV" interchangeably. When a recruiter asks for your "CV", they usually mean a 1-2 page resume. When an academic institution asks for your "CV", they mean a comprehensive document.
The distinction matters because sending the wrong format wastes everyone's time.
Resume: short, targeted, corporate
A resume is:
- 1-2 pages maximum
- Targeted to a specific role or company
- Focused on relevant experience and achievements
- Used for corporate jobs, startups, MNCs
When to use: Applying to TCS, Infosys, Flipkart, Amazon, Deloitte, McKinsey, or any corporate/tech role in India.
CV (Curriculum Vitae): comprehensive, academic
A CV is:
- 2+ pages (no upper limit for senior academics)
- Comprehensive record of all academic and professional work
- Includes publications, research, conferences, grants, teaching
- Used for academic positions, research roles, government jobs
When to use: Applying to IITs, IIMs, CSIR labs, UGC positions, university faculty roles, or international PhD programs.
What most Indian freshers need
If you are a fresher applying to campus placements or entry-level corporate roles: you need a resume, not a CV. One page, targeted, achievement-based.
The only exception: if you are applying to research positions or academic roles where a full publication list is expected.
The Carve approach
Carve builds resumes by default — 1-page, ATS-friendly, achievement-focused documents optimized for Indian corporate hiring. If you need an academic CV, the Academic layout supports multi-page output with publication and research sections.
