CV vs Resume: Which One Should You Send?

Understand how CV and resume conventions vary by country and role, then choose the document the employer expects.

Start with the employer's instructions

The words CV and resume do not have one universal meaning. In the United States and Canada, resume usually means a concise document tailored to a job, while CV often means a longer record for academic or research applications. In the United Kingdom and many other markets, CV is the everyday term for a job application document. In India, the terms are often used interchangeably in corporate hiring.

When a posting specifies a format, file type, or length, follow it. If it says CV but describes a one-page corporate application, send a focused job document rather than an academic history.

What belongs in a job resume or CV?

Show contact details, a brief profile when useful, relevant work, projects, skills, and education. Give the most space to evidence that matches the role. One page can work for a student or early career applicant; more experienced candidates may need a second page. There is no fixed page count that works for every field.

For example, a data analyst applying to a product team might lead with recent analysis work and a project that changed a decision. Their full list of unrelated coursework would add little value. Use the resume builder or CV builder to draft and edit that focused document.

When do you need an academic CV?

An academic CV may include research appointments, publications, grants, teaching, presentations, service, and professional memberships. Its length follows the work you need to document. A graduate program, lab, or faculty role may ask for this detail even when a corporate employer would prefer a short resume.

If you have no publications or teaching history, do not invent those sections. Show the research or project experience you actually have and use the institution's application instructions.

A quick decision checklist

1. Read the job or program instructions and any requested file type.

2. Check whether the role is corporate, academic, research, or clinical.

3. Choose the evidence most relevant to that reader.

4. Keep the headings, dates, and PDF text clear and consistent.

5. Ask a local career adviser when country or profession conventions are unclear.
